4th place: Honorable mention
Niantic's Beyond Reality Development Contest 2019.
Flint and Steam is a geospatial, augmented reality mix of Dodgeball and Risk. Players choose one of four factions and battle giant land ships to gain territory for their team. The project was an entry for Niantic's first Beyond Reality Competition, using a precursor to the company's Lightship ARDK Development package. Over six months small team and I built out a fully functional Minimum Viable Product(MVP) and were Invited to showcase the game at Niantic's headquarters in San Francisco.
I've worked with Augmented Reality quite a bit, but never like this. We got a chance to enhance the real world and make things big, really big, forcing players to physically run if they wanted to dodge incoming cannon fire and collect their loot before it sinks.
Working with Niantic's Geospatial platform let us create a world that players could explore to seize territory, search for treasure, and dominate with their guild to build an empire.
In only six months a small team of five developers built a fully stocked MVP with multiple upgradeable ships and weapons, an achievment system, geolocated territories and a full story arc, all while learning the ins and outs of Niantic's early Lightship ARDK platform for Augmented Reality.
